HIFU in Makati: how it works, what it feels like, and who it suits
A plain explanation of high-intensity focused ultrasound for face lifting — the layer it targets, the timeline of results, and how we decide whether it is right for you.

If you have searched for "HIFU Makati", you have probably seen the same three words everywhere: lifting, non-invasive, no downtime. All true, but they do not tell you how it works or whether it is the right treatment for the change you want. This article does.
What HIFU actually does
HIFU stands for high-intensity focused ultrasound. The handpiece sends ultrasound energy through the skin and focuses it at a precise depth, the way a magnifying glass focuses sunlight. At the focal point the tissue heats to around 60–70 °C for a fraction of a second. The skin surface is not heated, which is why there is no wound and no downtime.
The depth matters. Most facial HIFU protocols place the energy at 4.5 mm, which is the SMAS layer — the sheet of connective tissue that surgeons tighten in a facelift — and at 3.0 mm and 1.5 mm for the deep and upper dermis. Heating these layers does two things:
- Immediate contraction of collagen fibres, which is the slight tightening you notice the same day.
- A repair response over the following weeks, in which the skin builds new collagen along the treated lines. This is the real lift, and it is why results keep improving for two to three months.
What a session feels like
After cleansing we map the treatment lines on the face. Each pulse feels like a brief prickle of heat. Over bone — the jawline and cheekbone — it is sharper; over the cheek it is mild. Most clients rate it 3–5 out of 10 and do not need anaesthetic cream. We adjust the energy level to you rather than running a fixed setting.
Afterwards the skin may be slightly pink or feel tender to the touch for a few hours. You can wear makeup the next day and there is no restriction on work or exercise.
Who it suits, and who it does not
HIFU is a good match if:
- You are starting to see loosening along the jaw, under the chin, or in the mid-cheek, and you want it firmer without surgery or injections.
- You prefer gradual, natural-looking change over a dramatic one.
- You can commit to one session every 6 to 12 months to maintain the result.
It is not the right first step if the main concern is volume loss (hollow cheeks or temples) — HIFU tightens but does not add volume — or if the skin is very thin and already quite tight. In those cases we will say so at consultation and suggest an alternative or no treatment.
HIFU should not be performed during pregnancy, over metal implants in the treatment area, or on skin with an active infection or open acne lesions.
HIFU with fat care: why we combine them
For the lower face we often pair HIFU with our non-injectable fat care: a functional gel containing phosphatidylcholine is delivered into the under-chin area with radiofrequency, then HIFU tightens the overlying tissue. The two steps address different causes of a soft jawline — a small fat pad and loosened support — in one 75-minute visit. We do not use injections for this.
How we do it at JPN Beauty Lounge
- Every protocol is approved by our supervising physician, who is in clinic weekly.
- Treatments are performed by therapists trained at our clinics in Japan.
- The device and consumables are genuine products imported directly from Japan. The maker and model are listed on the HIFU page.
- We photograph before and after in the same room and light, with your written consent, and never retouch.
If you are unsure whether HIFU or something else fits your concern, send us a photo on Messenger and we will tell you honestly before you book.
How long does a HIFU session take?
Full face takes about 45 to 60 minutes including cleansing and aftercare. Lower face only is about 30 minutes.
When will I see the result?
Some tightening is visible right after. The main lift develops over 4 to 12 weeks as new collagen forms, and typically lasts 6 to 12 months.
Is HIFU the same as RF or a thread lift?
No. RF heats the upper dermis for texture and mild tightening; threads are a minor surgical procedure. HIFU reaches the deeper SMAS layer without any incision.
